Why Wax? Isn't lube already good enough?

Bicycle chains often are the hardest working mechanical component on your bike. There are over 40,000 sliding surfaces on the chain with each crank revolution!

Chain Lubrication is mostly solved issue - for example - motorcycles now use chains with O-rings, which don't re-lubrication.
However, due to the gear system on bicycle, bicycle chains require different approach and oil-based lubricants really aren't a good solution. Oil-based lubricants work well in enclosed systems, but on a bicycle, where the chain is open to the elements and is in close proximity to people's clothes, oil isn't really a good choice.

Solid Lubricants!

Solid lubricants aren't exactly new. Putting your chain in a pot of paraffin wax was known to cyclists since chains became common on bikes.

What is new is the latest research that has gone into solid lubricants. Solid Wax Blends constantly show the best friction performance during independent friction testing. And friction in bicycle chains is what causes chain and casette wear.

How do you apply solid wax to a bicycle chain?

You need to melt it first. Then, put the chain in the melted wax. The process is called Immersive Waxing and besides incredible performance it has other advantages as well:

  • The chain gets fully lubricated inside - where it matters.
  • Wax is hard and hydrophobic, so it remains clean, regardless of the riding conditions.
  • Being incredibly clean, wax prolongs the life of chains and casettes.
  • The dirt in the chain is washed when you re-wax.
  • You no longer need degreasers and chemicals to clean your drivetrain, which makes the process very enviromentally-friendly.

Frequently Asked Question about Chains, Drivetrains, and Chain Waxes

The science behind hard chain waxes is rock hard and has been proven multiple times over. In every independent chain lubrication test, you will find hard waxes always at the top tier as the lowest friction lube and consequently the one that reduces wear the most. In addition, waxing is eco-friendly, as it greatly reduces the need for cleaning agents needed to wash your bicycle.
A waxed chain on a dry road can be ridden for 600 km or more without the need for re-wax. We recommend re-waxing in dry conditions every 300-500 km, and in wet conditions, or mountain bike riding ever 150-200km. Keep in mind that as wax is hard and flakes off the chain may start producing noises long before the wax has weared off.
Yes, according to most independent testing there are some lubes that are better avoided:
  • Chain lubricants that are usually marketed as "dry-lubes". These consistently Show the worst results in friction and wear testing. Most of their volume is mainly carrier, which evaporates and leaves a very small amount of actual lubricant on the chain.
  • Aerosols - they are very wastefull, dangerous for human health, as you inevitably inhale a lot of the aerosol, and they are mostly carrier that dries off and leave only small amount of actual lubricant.
Citrus-based degreasers use a chemical called "Limonene". It is a pretty aggressive solvent, but it certainly is better than most petroleum-based solvents and cleaners, at least from an enviromental and safety point of view. However, it is still best if we can reduce our use of chemicals.
PTFE, or Teflon, is often used in chain lubes, as it has great anti-friction properties, can be purchased in a variety of particle sizes and is relatively cheap. It is assumed that PTFE is generally safe, but nevertheless it is an artificial chemical that is essentially a forever-chemical. Due to its inert chemical properties, every molecule of PTFE manifactured will remain in the enviromnent forever. Instead of PTFE, we are using Tungsten Disulfide in our racing formulas, which is an amazing friction modifier, but also is a natural chemical that isn't poisonous.
Chain waxing has been known for a lot of years now, and it already has a foothold in the road cycling worls. It has yet to become popular among mountain bikers, which is a petty, as it is the most suitable lube for dirty conditions, which mountain bikers experience on every ride. The inherent dirt and water repellent properties of chain wax make it especially suitable for the muddy riding conditions. Our special mountain bike formulation solves one of the problems mountain bikers experience when using standard road racing waxes - when mud gets into the chain, it grinds of the wax and chains need to be re-waxed often. Our formula contains several types of waxes which improve its metal stickiness, and water repelation properties
Yes, due to the location of the chain drive in recumbents, chain waxes are the best choice for recumbent riders. While traditional lubes work well on recumbents due to the protection the drivetrain usually has from the elements, the chain still can become quite dirty which can be easily transferred to the rider's clothes or hands.
Yes, since folding bikes are often transported in cars and stored at flats, having an always clean chain is a great life improvement.
For races up to 200 km, you can race on chain without worrying. We have tested our waxes for up to 500 kms and they still perform better than most wet lubes, but at some point, the chain will become noisy, which can annoy you. For such cases, you can bring a small bottle of our wet wax.
